Ambode seeks end to domestic violence

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and his wife, Bolanle, at the weekend, advocated for the restoration of moral values in families, saying this was the only way to arrest societal decadence. They spoke at the 2016 International Family Day celebration, which they hosted at the State House, Ikeja, with the theme “families, healthy, lives and sustainable future.” The International Family day is observed globally May 15, every year.
A major highlight of this year’s celebration in Lagos was the recognition of three selected outstanding families for exemplary life. One of the recognised couples, the Bosun Ayindes, had been in marriage for 51 years, devoid of violence and rancour, an example the governor urged the society to emulate.
His wife, Bolanle said “the stability or otherwise of the society has been attributed to the role of family. The family is generally regarded as the pillar of the society, and without strong and united families, the stability of society would be weak.“A stable family structure is one of the basic building blocks for a healthy society.”She added that bad behaviours affecting the society today were traceable to change in family values, which had been on the decline in over a period of time.“It is therefore in the interest of all to ensure that family institution do not derail from its uncommon and important function, if we are to build a society that is decent and united,” she said. She therefore called on the society to use the occasion of this year’s international family day to resolve to protect the family, specifically the wife and children, from all forms of domestic violence. “As families, we must create in the consciousness of our children the need to maintain healthy living by abstaining from harmful habits,” Bolanle said.
