Nigeria’s National Security Adviser Sambo
Dasuki, has advised the Independent
National Electoral Commission (INEC) to consider a delay in the date for the
forthcoming general elections.
Dasuki made this remark today during a talk at a London
think-tank.He explained that the commission had only managed to distribute 30 million in the past year. The postponement he
noted will enable the commission distribute the rest of the cards.
“What sense does it make to vote three months
early when there are 30 million cards still with INEC? That’s my position,”Dasuki
said.
The
INEC schedule for conducting the general elections has been a subject of
controversy over the months with the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC)
accusing the Goodluck Jonathan administration of plotting to shift the
elections to satisfy its whims. These allegations have, however, been denied on
several occasions by the President’s handlers who accuse the APC of crying wolf
where there is none.
